What moves the S&P 500
The S&P 500 holds the 500 largest US companies. It moves with the quarterly results of the biggest firms, with the Federal Reserve's decisions and words on interest rates, and with US macro data: inflation, jobs, growth. One very large company alone can move the index.
How we measure
For each instrument we compute its "usual" move over 4 hours of open market (the median of recent days, excluding weekends and closed hours). When we publish a story, we look at the price 4 market hours later: if it moved more than usual we write "moved the price", otherwise "the market did not react". A big story with a flat price usually means the market already expected it.
